Nicotine - Quit Using Tobacco!
The facts are, Nicotine is not really a harmful drug. It is, however, a drug that our bodies become addicted to and this is what makes smoking cigarettes difficult to quit. It is the withdrawal symptoms from nicotine that usually prompt the well-meaning quitter to light up again. Nicotine is not the only thing that addicts us to smoking as there are social aspects related to a group of smokers as friends, the habit of the act of smoking, the pleasure of the taste of the smoke, and the enjoyment of the feeling of the smoke in the lungs that also add to the addiction. But habits are more easily broken and replaced by other activities than trying to quit nicotine because our bodies truly do go through physical withdrawal symptoms.
But the way our ancestors discovered to get nicotine was by burning or eating the tobacco leaf. At the time, it was not known that heavy tars, carbon monoxide, and other carcinogens were present and ingested by the body while smoking or chewing the tobacco leaf.
These ancient ways of getting nicotine are still used today because it is big business. Huge multi-national companies are raking in the profits from tobacco users and the medical industry is capitalizing on the revenue generated by the illnesses caused by it. Governments are also involved in this money circle as they heavily tax the use of tobacco. And this viscous circle continues to support itself because just think of what would happen to these revenue giants if everyone really decided to quit using tobacco!
But today, all the facts are in on the harmfulness of using tobacco, so what can the nicotine addict do to quit using tobacco?
Go Cold Turkey! Quit Nicotine and Quit Tobacco altogether.
Although this method seems to be the most radical, it is also one of the most successful ways to quit tobacco. But of course, this method quits nicotine at the same time. Followers of this method must have the will power to ignore all the cravings that the body will throw at them as it tries to convince them to give it nicotine. But eventually, these cravings, nervousness, irritability, and several other symptoms of nicotine withdrawal will subside and the strong willed former tobacco user will have not only done the right thing for his health by quitting tobacco, but he will also be released from his addiction to nicotine. See Stop Smoking Program for information on how you can go "Cold Turkey" without all these symptoms. You will be glad you did!
Quit Tobacco, but don't quit nicotine!
This method takes advantage of our modern science which allows us to extract pure nicotine that can be administered without the tars, gases, and other carcinogens present in tobacco. If our ancestors could have done this in the beginning, we probably would not have tobacco users today! And, since nicotine is a legal drug, we would just have a bunch of nicotine addicts in our midst. But seriously, this method does allow us to end the actual health issue of using tobacco and this is the most important thing. There are several methods available today for quitting tobacco without quitting nicotine.
Quit Smoking with Nicotine Patches.
This is quite popular, a skin patch laced with nicotine which can be absorbed by the body in limited amounts is placed on the skin so that the body will not react to a sudden loss of nicotine when the use of tobacco is stopped. The nicotine skin patch releases small amounts of nicotine over time so it is important to replace these before they are depleted. If this is not done, the body will have a reaction which will not be immediately resolved by putting another skin patch on as it takes time for the patch to release enough nicotine to satisfy the body's needs. Often, this is the reason that the nicotine patch method of quitting tobacco fails. The user has missed his schedule, had the withdrawal reaction, and had to resort to tobacco to get the quick shot of nicotine he needs. But quitting tobacco by using nicotine patches is a good method if the user can keep to a schedule of replacing the patches as required.
Chew Nicotine Gum - Quit Tobacco.
Nicotine Gums are another method that replaces the nicotine from tobacco with a pure form of nicotine. Quitting tobacco is often easier if another activity replaces it and with the added shot of nicotine, this method is also popular. However, as with the nicotine patches, nicotine gum is a slower method of supplying the body with nicotine than smoking so effort must be made to keep the nicotine levels fairly constant for the best effect.
E-Cigarettes - Don't Quit Nicotine or Smoking, Just Quit Tobacco.
E-cigarettes (electric/electronic cigarettes) are devices that look like cigarettes and are used similar to cigarettes that contain a capsule of pure nicotine, a battery, an atomizer, and an LED. A flow sensor detects when the smoker takes a drag and a small amount of pure nicotine is atomized into the air flow providing a smoke that not only contains nicotine, but a flavor similar to tobacco. This smoke looks realistic and feels realistic in the lungs, yet is not harmful to the smoker or to people exposed to the second-hand smoke. This is a very promising method for quitting tobacco which requires no basic behavioral changes necessary for the smoker. The nicotine is absorbed by the body quickly and has the same effect as smoking tobacco. See Electric Cigarette for more information.
Quit Nicotine Shot - Drastic Measure
This quit nicotine method requires a prescription from a doctor. Dangerous compounds like scopolamine, atropine, and antihistamines are injected into the body to block the nicotine receptors in the brain. It has proven to be 71% effective in keeping individuals free from tobacco beyond 6 months after the injection. Since a doctor must administer this, it must be controlled to prevent harm to the patient due to the drugs used, but the long term benefit of quitting tobacco makes this an acceptable risk to most who have chosen to use it.
Regardless of the method used to quit tobacco, your health will rebound almost immediately once you do. Stopping the harmful effects of tobacco will add several years of good health to your life that you would not have if you continued to use tobacco. For smokers, the damage to the lungs is of most concern and the sooner the toxins are stopped, the sooner the lungs can start dissolving the tars and regaining full function. To speed this process up, starting a lung detoxification process after quitting smoking is the best thing you can do to help the body dissolve these tars and expel the harmful chemicals from smoking. See the Lung Detoxification for more information.
Tobacco Companies, the medical community, and government tax revenue departments may not like it, but you and I know that quitting tobacco is the smart thing to do. So take a serious look at the methods available to help you with this on this website. Read each link Electric Cigarette, Stop Smoking Program, and Quit Smoking Hypnosis so that you can decide how you will become free of the tobacco habit.
